Hey everyone, just adopted a 2-year-old rescue mix (maybe lab/shepherd?) named Buddy. He's been with us 3 days and is SO timid. Hides under the table, won't take treats from my hand, and just stares at his empty food bowl. I bought some basic squeaky toys but he ignores them completely. I'm worried he's depressed or traumatized. What toys have worked for your shy dogs? Should I try something specific? Thanks!

First of all, congrats on the rescue! As a cat lady, I'll say this - shy animals need time. My cats ignored toys for weeks when I first got them. For dogs, I've heard puzzle toys with hidden treats work well because it gives them a job to do without direct interaction. Maybe a Kong you can stuff with peanut butter? Start by leaving it near his safe space without forcing it. Also, don't hover - let him explore on his own terms. Good luck!

Ugh, my fussy cat Mr. Whiskers was the same way. Honestly, I'd skip the loud squeaky toys - they might scare him. Try something soft and quiet like a plush toy without a squeaker. My sister's dog loves those crinkle toys that make a subtle noise. Also, have you tried a snuffle mat? It lets them forage for food in a low-pressure way. And seriously, give it time - 3 days is nothing. My cat took 3 MONTHS to stop hiding under the bed.

Devoted dog mom here with 3 rescues! First, deep breaths - this is totally normal rescue behavior. For toys: 1) Food-dispensing toys (Kong Wobbler, treat balls) are GREAT because they associate you with good things when you fill them. 2) Try a lick mat with frozen yogurt or pumpkin - calming and engaging. 3) Avoid eye contact when offering toys initially, just toss it nearby casually. My most timid dog started with a simple rope toy she could chew alone. It took 2 weeks before she'd play with me. Be patient - you're doing great!

Reptile enthusiast perspective: sometimes less stimulation is better. My bearded dragon gets stressed with too many new things. Maybe just one simple toy at a time? A soft, scentless cloth toy you can rub on yourself first to add your smell. Or a chew toy like a benebone - my friend's dog loves those. Also, try playing soft music or leaving a TV on when you're not home. And remember, reptiles and dogs both need routine - keep toy times consistent. Good luck with Buddy!
