Hey everyone, freaking out a bit here. My 3-year-old golden retriever Murphy got into something while I was at work today. Found a chewed up rubbery thing (maybe a toy piece?) on the floor, and now I noticed a red, raised spot on his lower belly about the size of a quarter. He's acting normal - eating, drinking, playing - but the spot looks weird and I'm worried it's related. Should I rush him to the emergency vet tonight or wait for my regular vet tomorrow morning? Not sure if I'm overreacting!

First - I'm NOT a vet, just a big dog lover with lots of experience (have 3 large breeds). But I've been through similar scares! The combo of eating something unknown + new skin issue would make me lean toward getting it checked. Is the spot warm to touch? Is Murphy licking/scratching at it? Any vomiting or diarrhea since eating the object? Those would be emergency signs for sure. Personally, I'd probably call an emergency vet line for advice - many have free phone consultations. Better safe than sorry with foreign objects!

Cat lady here but pets are pets! My cat ate part of a hair tie once and had a similar reaction - turned out to be an allergic thing to whatever the rubber was treated with. The spot appeared where the hair tie passed through her system. Murphy might be having a reaction to whatever chemicals were in that rubber. Is he on any flea/tick meds? Sometimes those can cause skin reactions too. I'd monitor closely tonight but if the spot grows or he starts acting off, definitely go in. Maybe try a benadryl? (Check dosage for dogs first tho!)

Following up on Clara's point - YES check benadryl dosage if you go that route! Usually 1mg per pound of dog weight. But honestly, with the unknown ingestion, I'd be more concerned about intestinal blockage than the skin spot. The spot could be unrelated (hot spot, bug bite) or related (allergic reaction like Clara said). But foreign objects in guts are no joke. If Murphy stops eating, seems lethargic, or has any tummy issues, that's straight to emergency vet territory. Keep us posted!
