Hey everyone, first time dog owner here and I'm struggling big time. Got a 4-month-old lab mix named Cooper who REFUSES to potty outside - he'll hold it until we're back inside then go on the rug. Also, leash training is a nightmare - he either plants his butt or tries to chase every squirrel. I've tried treats, praise, patience... running out of ideas. What worked for your pets??

Oh honey, been there! My golden retriever Luna was exactly the same. For potty training: take Cooper out EVERY 30-60 minutes, especially after eating/drinking/playing. When he goes outside, throw a PARTY - high-value treats (I used chicken bits) and crazy praise. For leash pulling, try the 'tree method' - when he pulls, just stop completely until leash is loose. It's tedious but works! Also, are you using a harness? Game changer for pullers.

Interesting to see mammal training struggles! With my bearded dragon Spike, I used timed feedings and heat lamps to regulate bathroom habits. Not sure if that translates to dogs though... Have you considered pheromone sprays? They work wonders for reptile anxiety during handling sessions. Maybe there's a canine version?

BoxerBill243 - actually yes! Adaptil collars/sprays mimic mom-dog pheromones and can help with anxiety. OP: consistency is KEY. Keep a potty log if you have to. And for leash training, try practicing indoors first with minimal distractions. How long have you had Cooper? Sometimes it just takes weeks for them to settle in.

Thanks both! VetVicky746 - the tree method sounds worth trying, and I'll grab a harness tomorrow. We've had Cooper about 3 weeks. BoxerBill243 - never thought about anxiety being part of it! Might try the pheromone spray too. Appreciate the help - gonna be more consistent with the schedule and try stopping when he pulls. Will update in a week!
