Hey everyone, I just adopted a rescue rabbit yesterday from a local shelter. He's a sweet little guy but he's super shy and hides in his hidey-house all day. I'm worried he's not adjusting well. He barely eats when I'm around and runs away if I try to approach. Any advice on how to help him feel more comfortable? I really want to give him a good home but I'm stressing that I'm doing something wrong!

First off - thank you for rescuing! With my dog rescues, I always say patience is key. Small animals like rabbits can be even more skittish. Give him at least a week to just observe his new environment without forcing interaction. Sit quietly near his enclosure for 15-20 minutes daily so he gets used to your presence. Offer treats from your hand but don't reach in suddenly. It took my last rescue dog 3 weeks to even make eye contact!

Not a bunny expert but from my aquarium hobby - environment matters a LOT. Make sure he has plenty of hiding spots (you mentioned a hidey-house, maybe add a couple more with different exits so he doesn't feel trapped). Keep the room quiet, consistent lighting schedule, and avoid sudden movements near his space. With my shy fish, I'd just sit and watch them for days before they'd come out. Sometimes they just need to feel secure first.

My cat was like this when I first got her - hid under the bed for a week! What worked for me was establishing a routine. Feed at the same times every day, talk softly when you're near his area (I used to read aloud to my cat lol), and let him come to you. Maybe try leaving some favorite greens just outside his hidey-house so he associates you with good things? Also - is he alone? Some small animals do better with a friend once settled.

Agree with everyone about patience! My big dogs took time to adjust too. One thing that helped my nervous rescue was background noise - I'd leave soft music or the TV on low volume when I wasn't home so it wasn't dead silent then suddenly noisy when I returned. Also, watch his body language closely. If his ears are pinned back or he's thumping, he's stressed. If he's just watching you quietly, that's actually progress! Give us updates!
