Need harness/leash/cage advice for my new bearded dragon!

Hey everyone! Just got a juvenile bearded dragon (about 12 inches long) and I'm looking for recommendations. I want a secure harness/leash for outdoor time, and also need a good cage setup. He's in a 20-gallon tank now but I know he'll need bigger soon. Any favorite brands or specific products? Budget-friendly options appreciated but I want quality!

Wait, you put reptiles on LEASHES? That's wild! My cats would never tolerate that lol. But seriously, I've seen those little lizard harnesses at PetSmart - they look like tiny vests with strings. Might be worth checking out? Can't help with cages though, sorry!

Congratulations on your new friend! For enclosures, I'd recommend going bigger sooner rather than later - adult beardies need at least 40-50 gallons. Zoo Med and Exo Terra make good front-opening terrariums that are easier to clean. As for harnesses, I've heard good things about the 'ReptiLeash' brand - adjustable and secure. Just introduce it slowly with treats!

Do you think a 40-gallon would be okay for his whole life, or should I plan for even bigger? Also, any substrate recommendations? I'm using reptile carpet now but heard mixed things.

I'd plan for 75+ gallons for an adult male - they can get up to 24 inches! Bigger is always better for reptiles. For substrate, tile or slate is safest - easy to clean and no impaction risk. Avoid loose substrates like sand, especially for juveniles. The ReptiLeash comes in different sizes, so measure your dragon's chest before ordering!
