Help! My new rescue reptile is super shy - normal behavior?

Hey everyone, I just adopted a rescue bearded dragon yesterday (my first reptile!). He's about 2 years old according to the shelter. He's eating fine when I leave food, but he hides ALL the time and flinches if I move near the tank. Is this normal adjustment period stuff? I'm worried he was traumatized or something. His previous owner surrendered him due to 'moving' but idk. Any advice for helping him feel safe?

Totally normal! Reptiles aren't like dogs - they don't bond the same way. Give him at least 2 weeks with minimal handling. Make sure his temps are right (basking spot 95-110F, cool side 75-85F) and he has plenty of hides. Sometimes covering 3 sides of the tank with paper helps them feel secure. What's your setup like? Also, what are you feeding? Stress can cause appetite issues later.

I don't know reptiles, but with rescue dogs, we always do the 'two week shutdown' - basically leave them alone to decompress. Maybe similar concept? Poor thing is in a new environment with new smells/sounds. BoxerBill's advice sounds good. Just be patient and let him come to you when he's ready. Thank you for rescuing!

Aw, poor baby! My heart goes out to him. I agree with being patient. Maybe talk softly near his tank so he gets used to your voice? That works with shy dogs. Also, try hand-feeding treats (once he's settled) to build trust. What's his name? Sending love!

AkitaAlice is right about the decompression time. TerrierTim - hand-feeding is great advice once he's less stressed! Use tongs at first though, bearded dragons sometimes mistake fingers for food lol. OP, keep us updated! Post a pic when he's comfortable. Most beardies become total couch potatoes once they settle in.
