Hey everyone, I'm freaking out a bit. My 3-year-old tabby, Luna, just chewed off and swallowed a small piece of foam from the base of her new cat tree. It was about the size of a dime. She seems fine right now - eating, drinking, using the litter box normally. But I'm a worrywart with my cats. Should I rush her to the emergency vet or just monitor her? I know foam isn't digestible. Help!

Oh dear, I've been there with my senior rescue dogs eating weird stuff! First off - NOT A VET, just sharing experience. With my dogs, small non-digestible objects sometimes pass through, but sometimes they cause blockages. Watch for vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, or straining in the litter box. If she shows any of those signs, vet immediately. My old lab once ate part of a toy and needed surgery, so I'm cautious. Maybe call your vet's after-hours line for advice? They might say to monitor since it was small.

DEFINITELY NOT A VET but as a dog mom who's spent too much time at clinics: foam is tricky because it can expand in the stomach. A dime-sized piece might be okay, but I'd be worried about obstruction. My vet always says 'when in doubt, check it out' - especially with cats since they hide pain so well. Could you call an emergency vet for phone advice? They usually don't charge for that. Also, check if the foam was treated with any chemicals - some cat furniture has fire retardants that could be toxic. Hope Luna's okay!

Thanks both! Update: I called the emergency vet line like you suggested. They said since she's acting normal and it was small, I should monitor closely for 24 hours but bring her in if she shows ANY symptoms. They said to watch her poop (lovely) to see if it passes. No vomiting so far, and she just ate dinner normally. The cat tree was marketed as pet-safe, but who knows about chemicals. I'm keeping her in my bedroom tonight so I can hear if she has issues. Really appreciate the advice - I was about to drive to the ER vet at midnight!
