Hey everyone, I just adopted a rescue betta fish from a local shelter yesterday. He's in a 5-gallon tank with a heater and filter, but he's been hiding behind the decor non-stop since I brought him home. He won't come out to eat when I drop food in, and he seems really skittish if I move near the tank. Is this normal for a rescue? How long does it usually take for them to adjust? I'm worried he's stressed or sick. Any advice would be awesome!

Totally normal! Fish, especially rescues, need time to acclimate. Make sure your water parameters are stable (test for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate). Bettas are territorial but can be shy at first. Try dimming the lights or adding floating plants for cover. He might not eat for a day or twoâtry offering food at the same time daily, and remove uneaten bits to keep water clean. Give him a week to settle in before worrying too much.

As a dog rescuer, I see this all the time with new petsâthey're scared in a new environment. Fish are no different! Patience is key. Avoid tapping the glass or sudden movements. Maybe sit quietly by the tank for short periods so he gets used to your presence. Rescue animals often have past trauma, so extra TLC goes a long way. Keep us posted!

Aw, poor little guy! My terrier was a rescue and hid under the bed for days. For fish, I'd second Larry's adviceâstable water is crucial. Maybe add a hiding spot like a small cave or tube so he feels secure. If he's still not eating after 3-4 days, consider trying different foods (like frozen brine shrimp). Don't overfeed though! Hope he perks up soon!
