Hey everyone, I'm at my wit's end here. I recently got a beautiful betta fish named Bubbles, and I'm trying to train him to use a specific corner of the tank for... well, you know, his business. I've seen videos of trained fish, but no matter what I try (target feeding, light signals), he just does his thing wherever! Also tried getting him used to a tiny 'leash' (safe tether for tank transfers) and he freaks out. Any aquatic pet owners have advice? Is this even possible or am I dreaming too big?

LOL welcome to the world of non-furry pets! I keep bearded dragons, and let me tell you, reptiles and fish don't really 'train' like mammals. With my dragons, I've had SOME success with routine - they learn feeding times and spots if you're consistent for months. For Bubbles, maybe try a dedicated feeding corner ONLY, and he might associate that area with 'activities'? But a leash... yeah that's a mammal thing. Fish don't do leashes, sorry. Maybe focus on tank enrichment instead?

As a cat owner, I feel your pain about stubborn pets! My Persian, Fluffy, still scratches the couch despite three scratching posts. But fish?? Dude, they don't have the brain wiring for potty training. My advice: invest in a better filter and clean the tank regularly. That's your 'potty training' for fish. If you want a trainable pet, maybe consider a different animal? No offense, but this seems like asking a rock to fetch.

Hey OP! Dog mom here, but I've kept fish before. Patty's right about consistency - fish can learn routines through positive association. Try placing a distinctive colored stone or plant in one corner, and ONLY feed near it. Over time, Bubbles might gravitate there for all activities. But please, NO leashes or tethers - that's stressful and dangerous for fish. Their scales and slime coat can get damaged. Focus on creating a happy, predictable environment instead of 'training' in the dog/cat sense. Good luck!
