Hey everyone! I have a 4-month-old Lab mix who's absolutely adorable but OH MY GOSH his biting during play is out of control! He doesn't mean to hurt but those puppy teeth are SHARP and he gets way too riled up. I've tried saying 'ow' loudly, redirecting to toys, even timeouts in his crate. Nothing seems to stick. He's just SO excited all the time. Any seasoned puppy parents have advice? My arms look like I fought a cat lol!

Oh the puppy biting phase - I remember it well! My golden was the same way. What finally worked for us was the 'yelp and freeze' method. When he bit too hard, I'd let out a high-pitched 'YIPE!' then go completely still and turn away for 10-15 seconds. Dogs hate losing attention. It took about 2 weeks but he got the message. Also, make sure he's getting enough sleep - overtired puppies are BITIER puppies!

Labs are notorious for this lol. My husky was bad but in a different way - she'd just grab and run! What helped was ending play sessions immediately the moment teeth touched skin. No exceptions. Also, try the 'three strikes' rule - first bite redirect, second bite warning, third bite walk away. Consistency is everything. And get some bitter apple spray for your arms/clothes if needed!

Not a vet but I work at a vet clinic and see this all the time! One tip that often gets overlooked - make sure you're not inadvertently encouraging the biting. Wrestling, tug-of-war, and chase games can all ramp up arousal and lead to nipping. Try calmer games like 'find it' with treats or gentle fetch. Also, increase exercise - a tired puppy is a bitey puppy's worst nightmare! That lab energy needs an outlet.

Thanks everyone! I hadn't thought about the overtired thing - he does get bitey around nap time. I'm going to try the yelp and freeze method plus more enforced naps. Also good call on calmer games - we've been doing too much tug lately. Will update in a couple weeks!
