I adopted a 3-year-old beagle mix three weeks ago and I'm still having accidents in the house. He's supposedly housebroken according to the shelter but he pees inside multiple times a day. I take him out every 2 hours, after meals, after naps... he does go outside too but keeps having accidents. Is this normal? When does it get better? I'm starting to feel like I'm failing him :(

Oh friend, three weeks is NOTHING for an adult rescue! Beagles especially can be tricky - they're stubborn hunters. Some rescue dogs were never actually properly housebroken, they just learned to go outside in their previous homes. Treat it like a brand new puppy. Also, get an enzymatic cleaner like Rocco & Roxie - regular cleaners don't fully eliminate the odor and dogs will go back to the same spots.

My rescue took 4 MONTHS to fully get it. She was traumatized from being in a shelter and had forgotten everything. The key is consistency and NOT punishing accidents - that makes it worse. Dogs don't connect punishment with something that happened hours ago. Just clean it up and move on. Also, try bell training - hang bells on the door and ring them every time you go out. She learned to ring them herself!

Thank you both - this is so reassuring! I didn't realize it could take so long. I'll get the enzymatic cleaner and try the bell training. He's actually really good at signaling when he needs to go out at night but struggles during the day. Maybe he's just anxious? Anyway, appreciate the support!
