Hey everyone, I just adopted a 2-year-old mixed breed rescue dog named Luna yesterday. She's sweet but SO timid. She won't come out from under the coffee table, shakes when I approach, and hasn't eaten much. The shelter said she came from a neglectful situation. I'm worried I'm doing something wrong or stressing her out more. Any tips for helping a scared rescue adjust? I want her to feel safe here.

First of all, THANK YOU for adopting a rescue! Don't panic - this is totally normal. It's called the '3-3-3 rule': 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, 3 months to feel at home. Give her space, don't force interaction, and let her come to you. Put her food/water near her hiding spot and sit quietly nearby so she gets used to your presence. I've fostered dozens of shy dogs - patience is key! Also, try some high-value treats like boiled chicken to build positive associations.

VetVicky is spot on! My rescue terrier, Buster, hid behind the sofa for a week when I got him. I just talked softly to him, left treats around, and eventually he started peeking out. Now he's a velcro dog who won't leave my side! Maybe try a calming pheromone diffuser or a snug shirt? And keep things quiet - no loud TV or sudden movements. It might take weeks but she'll come around. You're doing great just by being concerned!

Not a dog expert but with my reptiles, I always say let them settle in their new enclosure for a week before handling. Same principle probably applies - new environment is stressful. Maybe set up a cozy crate with a blanket so she has a safe den? My bearded dragon took months to stop hiding when I walked by. Good luck!

BoxerBill's crate idea is good! Make it cozy with a blanket and leave the door open so she can retreat there. Also, avoid direct eye contact with shy dogs - it can feel threatening. Look at her sideways or blink slowly. And keep walks short/stress-free for now. Update us in a few days! P.S. If she doesn't eat at all in 48 hours, call your vet just to be safe.
