I'm worried sick about my parakeet Blue. He's been plucking his chest feathers for the past month and now has a bald patch. He's about 4 years old, in a cage with a mirror and toys, and I give him attention daily. The pet store said he might be bored but I'm not sure. He's still eating and drinking fine. Should I take him to a vet? Is this serious?

Please get him to an avian vet ASAP! Feather plucking can have many causes - medical (parasites, liver issues, allergies) or behavioral (boredom, stress, anxiety). The fact that he's plucking one specific area makes me think it might be physical - could be a skin irritation or even pain. Don't wait on this.

I've dealt with this before. First, rule out medical causes with a vet. If it's behavioral, try: more foraging opportunities (scatter food in shredded paper), different toys rotated weekly, more out-of-cage time, and maybe reduce mirror time (some birds get obsessed with their reflection). Also try a 'collar' temporarily - soft collars prevent access to feathers while healing.

Okay I'm booking an appointment today. I had no idea it could be serious. The mirror might be an issue - he does spend a lot of time with it. I'll also get some foraging toys. Thanks for the quick responses everyone!
