Hey everyone, I'm new to bird ownership and got a young African Grey a few months ago. He's super smart and friendly, but I'm having two big issues: 1) He poops wherever he wants - on me, the furniture, his perches... I've tried timing it and putting him over a tray, but he just holds it until he's back on my shoulder. 2) I bought a little bird harness for walks, but he absolutely freaks out when I try to put it on. Bites, screams, the whole drama. Any tips from experienced bird owners? I feel like I'm failing at basic bird parenting!

Reptile guy here, but I've kept birds before! For potty training - birds don't have bladders like mammals, so they can't really 'hold it' long term. What worked for my cockatiel was watching for pre-poop signals (they often get a little fidgety or lift their tail) and immediately saying 'Go poop!' while moving them to a designated spot. Took weeks of consistency, but he eventually got it. For harnesses - go SLOW. Let your bird investigate it first without wearing it, then just drape it over his back for seconds at a time with treats. Might take months of desensitization. Patience is key!

lol I'm a dog person but my sister has parrots! She swears by 'poop training' them to go on command - she says 'go potty' right before they naturally would (like after waking up or eating) and gives a treat after. For the harness, she literally spent 2 months just getting her bird comfortable touching it before even attempting to put it on. Birds are way more sensitive than dogs about stuff touching their bodies apparently. Maybe try a different style harness? Some are less intrusive.

Devoted dog mom here who also volunteers at an avian rescue! First - NEVER punish for accidents, birds don't understand that and it'll damage your bond. The key is positive reinforcement and observation. Most birds poop every 15-20 minutes when awake. Watch the clock, and right before that time, move them to an acceptable spot (paper-lined cage corner, trash can, etc.). When they go there, praise and treat! For harnesses: BoxerBill and AkitaAlice are right about slow introduction. Also try putting it on when your bird is sleepy/calm. And consider if harness training is necessary - many birds get enough exercise with supervised flight in bird-proofed rooms. Good luck!

Following up on Vicky's point - my sister actually gave up on the harness with one of her birds cause it stressed him out too much. She uses a travel carrier for vet visits instead. Maybe ask yourself if outdoor walks are essential? Indoor flight time might be safer and less stressful. But if you're determined, keep sessions short and always end on a positive note with a favorite treat!
