Hey everyone, I just adopted a rescue cockatiel named Sunny yesterday. He's about 2 years old and came from a not-so-great situation. He's eating and drinking okay, but he's SO shy. He just sits in the corner of his cage, puffed up, and won't come near me. If I try to put my hand near the cage, he backs away. Is this normal for a rescue bird? How long does it usually take for them to warm up? I'm worried I'm doing something wrong. Any advice would be amazing!

Ugh, birds are so complicated compared to cats. My cat took like 2 days to adjust when I got her from the shelter. But birds are different I guess? Maybe just give him space? Like don't stare at him too much - cats hate that too. Put his cage in a quiet corner where he can see the room but not right in the middle of everything. And maybe talk softly to him so he gets used to your voice? Sorry not much help - birds freak me out a bit with all the flapping!

First of all, THANK YOU for adopting a rescue! That's awesome. With birds, especially rescues, patience is key. It can take weeks or even months for them to feel safe. Don't try to force interaction - let him set the pace. Sit near his cage and read or talk quietly so he gets used to you. Offer treats from your hand through the bars (millet spray works great!). Also make sure his cage has plenty of hiding spots/perches. If he's still super stressed in a week, consider a vet check to rule out health issues. My dog was terrified when I rescued her - took 3 months before she'd play fetch!

Reptile person here, but shyness is universal with rescues! My bearded dragon didn't eat for a week when I got him. Birds are prey animals so they're naturally cautious. Give him TIME. Like, way more than you think. Keep a consistent routine - same feeding times, same quiet hours. Avoid sudden movements/loud noises. Maybe cover part of his cage with a light cloth so he has a 'safe zone'? And seriously, don't take it personally - it's not you, it's his past trauma. He'll come around with patience and positive associations!
