Hey everyone, I'm at my wit's end! My 2-year-old German Shepherd mix, Thor, destroys every single toy I buy him within minutes. I've tried rubber balls, rope toys, stuffed animals - you name it, it's shredded. He's not aggressive, just has insane chewing power and seems to think destruction is his job. I'm worried about him swallowing pieces too. Does ANYONE have recommendations for toys that can actually survive this beast? Budget isn't really an issue if it lasts more than a week!

Welcome to the club! I've fostered over 50 power chewers through my rescue work. First - have you tried Kong Extreme? The black ones, not red. Fill with frozen peanut butter (xylitol-free!) and it'll keep him busy. Also, GoughNuts toys have a safety indicator - if they chew through to the red layer, it's time to replace. They guarantee them against destruction! One of my pitbull fosters took 6 months to finally kill one. Avoid anything with seams or weak points.

Omg I feel you!! My terrier mix is the same - we call him The Destroyer lol. Kongs work okay but he gets bored. What saved us was the West Paw Zogoflex toys! They're recyclable and my guy hasn't managed to destroy his Hurley bone in 4 months (record!!!). Also, have you tried antlers? The split elk antlers last forever with my heavy chewers. Just supervise at first to make sure they don't get too aggressive with them.

Vet perspective here - please be careful with antlers and hard nylon bones. I've seen too many slab fractures and broken teeth from them. Kong Extreme is vet-approved for power chewers. Another option: Galileo bones by Nylabone. They're designed for extreme chewers and won't splinter. Also, mental stimulation can reduce destructive chewing - try puzzle feeders or hiding treats in towels. How much exercise is Thor getting? Sometimes extra walks/training can help redirect that energy!

Vicky makes a good point about teeth! My vet said the same. Update: I just remembered - Bullymake boxes! They have a 'power chewer' subscription and replace toys if your dog destroys them. My friend's mastiff uses them and swears by them. Also, frozen carrots or frozen Kongs with kibble+broth are cheap destructible alternatives that are safe if swallowed. Good luck!! Post pics of Thor if you can :)
